Why I belong to CFUW…

The Canadian Federation of University Women in Lethbridge first came to my attention because of Maria Fitzpatrick, who I knew through my work as Vice President of my local union at Parks Canada with the Public Service Alliance of Canada in Ottawa-Gatineau. She was a prominent figure with the national component and I wondered about what attracted her to CFUW. Also, the Person’s Day event in October seemed a fabulous way to network with women interested in celebrating women’s achievements locally and nationally. When I first tried to attend in 2013, my first year in town, I couldn’t get in because the tickets were sold out! So I knew the group was a going concern. I determined to find out more. So I wrote to the national office with my membership fee and learned that local clubs handled all the membership administration. Then, upon talking with President, Patti Johnsen, she told me about the various interest groups, including the Book Group and how they operated, which met my desire to meet and interact with interested and interesting women. Since then, I have attending engaging talks and participated in the Alberta Council AGM. Now I’m Vice President of the local Club, mentored by a great group of Executive Board members. I look forward to many more years of learning and laughter with this wonderful group of women, dedicated to education, health and growth of women and girls here and around the world.
