CFUW Cowichan Valley Scholarship/Bursary InformationThe four information forms are distributed by email or mail to the four High Schools in the valley and to the Adult Learning Center. (Scholarship Application Form)
The deadline for completing the forms is April 30.
A small committee of CFUW members volunteer to read and choose the number of winners that we are able to give that year. Over the past three years there has been between 50 to 70 applications per year. Our main criteria is financial need, and must show good standing grades. The awards are a Scholarship/Bursary — the applicants do not have to be honour students but show strong academic achievement as well as a commitment to volunteering in the community and require financial assistance.
We have given out 35 Scholarships/Bursary awards in the past 10 years. (This includes the Vancouver Island University contributions since 2007 and the Thrifty Foods Smile Program).
Last year CFUW Cowichan awarded 4 Scholarship/Bursary awards, which included money from Vancouver Island University ($1,000.00) and Thrifty Food Smile Program ($840.00 which we topped up to $1,000.00) and two $1,000.00 awards from Club fund raising efforts.
CFUW Fund Raising
Throughout the year our CFUW has many fundraising activities that support our funds for the Scholarship/Bursary program. Our large Bridge Luncheon is our main fundraiser, Spring Flower Baskets were successful last year and hopefully we will have this again this year. There are other smaller fund raisers from past years that include raffles, calendar sales and recycling clothing.
Thrifty Foods Smile Card
CFUW Cowichan has opted into the Smile Program with Thrifty foods. Each time the Smile Card is “loaded” with a cash amount, Thrifty Foods automatically donates 5% into our organizations account to the maximum of $1,000.00 per calendar year. This is money goes towards one of our Scholarship/Bursary awards.
