Interest Groups

The Coffee Club meets once a month all year round at a local restaurant. In this relaxed, small group setting, members can share personal news, books of interest and issues of the day. It is an ideal opportunity for potential new members to be introduced to CFUW, and to find out more about our club.

The CFUW Bridge Club is a group of women who enjoy the game of bridge. We meet once a month from September to June, except for the month of December. We play at 1:30  p.m. on the 4th Wednesday of the month. We usually have 2 tables but  if the hostess can and wishes to accommodate 3 tables, we will fill those 3 tables. We have recently asked each player to donate a toonie and we give the winner $4 and the loser $2 and the balance of the money goes to our scholarship fund.

The hiking club meets the second Tuesday of the month. It is open to all members. Our hikes take us to many varied and interesting areas on southern Vancouver Island. A snack is taken to sustain our energy and usually we have lunch following our outings. We have walked Kinsol Tressel, Newcastle Island as well as many local mountains. The possibilities are endless and we will not have to visit the same place twice for years to come.

The Book Circle was one of the first Interest groups and has been well supported over the years. Our current format is five meetings per season, on the third Wednesday of September, November, January, March and May. We usually meet at 2 pm except for the May meeting, which is at 7pm.

We choose our books by consensus at the May meeting from a list of suggestions. We focus on novels but we have also enjoyed non-fiction. Over the years we have read many prize winning authors, including Canadian best sellers such as Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Linden MacIntyre, Joseph Boyden, Jane Urquhart, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Miriam Toews and Mary Lawson. Favourite British authors have included Ian MacEwan and Margaret Drabble while from USA we have enjoyed Barbara Kingsolver.

The meetings are hosted by members and we have dessert and tea. We all read the same book and we usually have a discussion leader to keep us on focus. Sometimes we select two books on a similar topic for one of the meetings.
